Moving with Pets: The 4 Things Your Pet Needs

The moving process can be overwhelming to the humans in the family but imagine what it might be like for your four-legged friends.  They can sense things are changing, strange people coming through the house, boxes scattered everywhere, a higher than usual stress level in the home.

Here are a few tips to put your furry friends at ease:

  1. Keep their sleeping and eating areas in tact as long as possible.

If possible have them spend the last few nights with a friend or family member or their favorite daycare while you are loading the moving truck and getting set up in your new home.  If they must stay with you through the move find a quiet room for them to stay secured from them.  Often times when animals are afraid they will run away so limiting their access to doors is always in their best interest.

  1. When they arrive at their new home take them on a tour and let them explore

Make sure they know where their bed and food will be set up (keep their old familiar ones for now) Show them where they are supposed to go potty. For pets that go outside take them out on a leash and show them where to go for a few days.

  1. After the move, don’t forget to update your pet licenses and contact information at their veterinarian. If you have moved to a new area it is wise to find a new veterinarian prior to being in an emergency situation.

  1. Most importantly they need their humans. They will pick up on your “vibe” so try to keep the anxiety level down as much as possible and take the time to love on them.  Having a plan in advance and allowing plenty of time for your move will alleviate stress from both the human and the critters.
